FRESH & LOCAL:Un-fig-ettable!
Those luscious fruits of summer, the figs are here. Delicate things with an almost peachy softness, the Celeste fig (pictured) is one of the more common varieties you'll see but brown turkey figs, and LSU gold and purple can also be found at the CCFM markets and provide a range of textures and flavors. Perfect for snacking straight out of the pint, figs are also highly versatile in the kitchen. The obvious use for a fruit is in a sweet treatment. Figs are great sliced and drizzled with honey, served over toast or yogurt, or in cakes, custards or other deserts. But they also pair very well with fresh cheeses and make an excellent addition to a variety of savory dishes. Try them in a grilled cheese, or pickled, or in a relish or chutney or in a salad with a balsamic dressing. We love them on the pizza in the  recipe below. The season should be good this year but it is short (3-4 weeks) so buy a flat to put up and practice your canning chops to enjoy them all year. Canned figs are great for baking, in yogurt or as a snack all on their own.
PICKS OF THE WEEK:Fourth of July PIE!
Those of you who have shopped with Ms. Chauvin at the Tuesday market know that she bakes a mean pie. With Independence Day rolling around the bend, Blue Ribbon Pies is taking orders for delicious, seasonal patriotic flag pies. These strawberry and blueberry filled pies look and taste great, and she's taking special orders. To reserve one for yourself call her ASAP! (985) 320-1188.
Red, White, and Blubes
Celebrate July Fourth in the French Market! Crescent City Farmers Market will be popping up between 1-5pm in our usual spot at 1235 N. Peters. Grab yourself some spicy boiled crawfish, roasted sweet corn, and an icy blueberry popsicle while you make your way through the flea market and shops. We will have live music, good vibes, and our all-star vendors, as usual. Don't forget about free parking - just pull up to the market! The last market of the season is July 11th so visit while you can!
One in a Melon
In case you didn't notice, summer is here! Long are the days of mid-day showers, 90 degree temps (feels like 100+), and relentless sunshine, but that's ok - we've got melons! Keep your eyes open for sweet, juicy watermelons in the striped starbrite and dark green jade varieties. Also spotted at the market are honeydew and cantaloupes - primo, wrangler, mag, and cruiser varieties. Regardless of the variety, these melons are ripe for the picking and bursting (sometimes literally) with flavor, and also a great way to stay hydrated. Be the champ of your 4th of July party - bring a big one.
VENDOR OF THE WEEK:Lilly Jane
Mandy Lilly of Lilly Jane has returned to market with a variety of sumptuous fig preserves. With a recent expansion of acreage on her farm Bois de Figue, the orchard is now made up of over 100 trees enabling an expanded fresh fig offering which includes brown turkey, celeste and LSU purple varieties. Hailing from St. Landry and Evangeline Parishes, she comes from a long line of farmers and educators. It was with her mother and grandmother that she first learned to make the fig preserves, and now with her husband and father they operate the orchard, keeping up the agricultural traditions of the family. For the first time this year, they're offering u-pick which you can find out more about at  Lillyjanenola.com. Find Lilly Jane at Tuesday Uptown, Saturday CBD and Saturday Rivertown markets.
TUESDAY'S GREEN PLATE SPECIAL:La Vie en Rose Cafe
We've got a b2b this month at the Green Plate Special tent! Join on on Tuesdays throughout July to experience tasty dishes from first timer La Vie en Rose Cafe and returning champ, Nepalese pop up Lahpet. This week we welcome New Orleans born and raised Chef Kirby Jones from La Vie en Rose and her menu of traditional creole cuisine. She's bringing all of your favorite classics - shrimp and grits, crawfish gravy and biscuits, and more! Stop by this Tuesday 7/3 to get your fill!

  • 1 small red onion, sliced
  • 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt, divided
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper, divided
  • 14 ounces store-bought fresh pizza dough

Please join us for a special evening with writer Karen Celestan and photographer Eric A. Waters celebrating their new book, FREEDOM'S DANCE: Social Aid and Pleasure Clubs in New Orleans.

In this pivotal book, the captivating and kinetic images of noted photographer Eric Waters are paired with a collection of insightful essays by preeminent authors and cultural leaders to offer the first complete look at the Social, Aid and Pleasure Club (SAPC) parade culture in New Or-leans. Ranging from ideological approaches to the contributions of musicians, development of specific rituals by various clubs, and parade accessories such as elaborately decorated fans and sashes, Freedom's Dance provides an unparalleled photographic and textual overview of the SAPC Second Line, tracking its origins in African traditions and subsequent development in black New Orleans culture.

Karen Celestan's vibrant narrative is supplemented with interviews of longtime culture-bearers such as Oliver "Squirk" Hunter, Lois Andrews (mother of Troy "Trombone Shorty" Andrews and James Andrews), Fred Johnson, Gregory Davis, and Lionel Batiste, while interdisciplinary essays by leading scholars detail the rituals, historic perspective, and purpose of the Second Line. FREEDOM'S DANCE defines this unique public-private phenomenon and captures every aspect of the Second Line, from SAPC members' rollicking introductions at their annual parade to a funeral procession on its way to the crypt.

Visually dazzling and critically important, FREEDOM'S DANCE serves as both a celebration and a deep exploration of this understudied but immediately recognizable aspect of the African American tradition in the Big Easy.

TALKBACK

June 23 - July 8 | CAC, Lusher HS, Wein Jazz & Heritage Center
TALKBACK is a new immersive comedy by New Orleans-theatre geniuses Christopher Kaminstein (THE STRANGER DISEASE) and Andrew Larimer(EXTERIOR. POOL-NIGHT). TALKBACK gives audiences a peek into the inner workings of grassroots American theatre companies (like The NOLA Project!) by imagining what would happen at a post-show audience discussion if everyone involved in the production told the absolute, unfiltered truth. The interactive show is at-times hilarious, at-times heartbreaking, and always surprising.

What is especially unique about this immersive comedy is that no two shows will ever be alike. Nor will any two weekends! Each week of our scheduled run, we will be touring the production to a different performance venue throughout the city, starting in the CBD at the Contemporary Arts Center, then moving uptown to Lusher's Lion's Gate Theater, then finally downtown to The George and Joyce Wein Jazz & Heritage Center. This will be unique, immersive, and exciting NOLA Project theatre at its very best - we hope you're excited to come along for the ride!

  • Beyoncé and Jay Z, September 13 at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome
  • Taylor Swift, September 22 at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome

Every year, ESSENCE Fest brings a wave of big-name acts to the Superdome. This year's headliners include Janet Jackson, Mary J. Blige, Erykah Badu, Snoop Dogg, and more. An annual celebration of black culture, the festival also holds smaller performances as well as workshops, an empowerment speech series, and much more. Bonus: all of the daytime programming at Essence Fest is free!

Inspired by the world-famous Encierro of Pamplona, Spain, New Orleans' Running of the Bulls begins its events on Friday, July 13. Participants take to the French Quarter streets in red and white ensembles as they try to avoid getting hit by a bull. Don't worry though, there aren't any real bulls here. Instead, roller derby team the Big Easy Rollergirls (and their Wiffle ball bats) chase guests around town.

New Orleans celebrates its French roots every July with a tribute to Bastille Day. Held at the New Orleans Museum of Art, the Fete includes local musicians, French cooking demonstrations, a dog costume contest, and plenty of wine and cheese.

New Orleans couldn't pass Louis Armstrong's birthday without a grand affair. Held at the New Orleans Jazz Museum at the Mint, Satchmo Summerfest celebrates Pops' birthday with music, food, and a second-line parade appropriately dubbed the "Satchmo Strut." The fest also includes seminars, discussions, and speakers focused on Louis Armstrong and his contributions to New Orleans - and the world.

Don't skip your laundry this week, y'all. Every year, a mass of white clothing takes over Julia Street as guests explore art galleries in the Warehouse District. What started as a way to revive the downtown's art district, has grown into one of the summer's most anticipated events. Channeling days gone by in New Orleans where residents donned white to reflect the summer sun, guests roam in an out of art galleries with handheld fans in tow on this evening celebration.

Don't put those linens in the wash just yet because Dirty Linen Night rolls through the French Quarter the following weekend! Join in as folks stroll down Royal Street to see the art galleries. Shopkeepers give away free dirty martinis and dirty rice too!

If caterpillars are creeping and termites are swarming, it must be time for Audubon Nature Institute's 2018 season of " Wild Nights''  and  "Insect Adventures.' '
Audubon Butterfly Garden and Insectarium is once again offering opportunities for up-close looks - during the day and after dark - at the amazing diversity of arthropods living among us.
"Ever wonder which marvelous moths and beautiful beetles are out and about at night,'' asks Zack Lemann, Audubon Butterfly Garden and Insectarium's Animal and Visitor Programs Manager. "And what about the darting dragonflies and active ants that fly and crawl about during hot summer days? Then don't miss this chance to learn about all the fascinating bugs that inhabit south Louisiana.''
The insect safaris take place in Audubon Wilderness Park located at Freeport-McMoRan Audubon Species Survival Center in Lower Coast Algiers and Audubon Louisiana Nature Center in eastern New Orleans adjacent to Joe Brown Park.
Registration for "Insect Adventures'' includes an aerial net, while "Wild Nights'' guests receive a night headlamp and batteries. All participants receive a small insect collection kit and an exclusive "Wild Nights Insect Adventures'' collectible water bottle.
"Insect Adventures'' are held from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., while "Wild Nights'' take place from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. Meals are not provided.
The cost is $60 for Audubon members and $70 for non-members (plus sales taxes). Guests must be six years of age or older. The adult-to-child ratio is three children per adult.
