Actors Direct

Tuesday, July 16, 2019 - Wednesday, February 19, 2020

Hosted by David Schwartz.

From Charlie Chaplin to Bradley Cooper, Ida Lupino to Greta Gerwig, the actor has often shined in an unexpected role–as film director. This new monthly series, programmed by David Schwartz, former Chief Curator, Museum of the Moving Image, features exclusive discussions and screenings of the best films that were directed by actors. The actor is the emotional center of a movie, and many of the director’s artistic choices are made to heighten the impact of the performances. So it makes sense that actors have a unique sensitivity to the work of the director, bringing emotional clarity to their craft. Guest speakers will include both directors and actors, and we are pleased to highlight the work of two great New Yorkers–the late Philip Seymour Hoffman, and the great John Turturro–to launch the series.
