From bestselling author Emily Goodwin comes the epic start to a sexy and exciting paranormal romance series...

Never trust a vampire.

I might have learned that lesson the hard way. But when I find myself in a vampire-owned bar, I don’t have much of a choice. With vampires still trying to assimilate into mainstream society, I’ve done Lucas King a favor by stopping one of his patrons from draining a human dry in the basement of his bar. A favor he'd prefer to repay in bed than in kind.

Vampires and witches have had more than a jaded history, and when witches start showing up dead in surrounding covens, all signs point to something old and powerful. Something that knows the ways of the witches.

Something--or someone--like Lucas.

What's worse than trusting a vampire? Falling in love with one.

A new paranormal romance that will have you drooling for me, lusting for Lucas, and wanting the power that comes from Callie...

I want to start off this review by saying the same thing I told Emily prior to me starting her novel... I have not read an incredible paranormal/ vampire romance since my Twilight years and knowing that a goddess such as Emily was writing a brand new series featuring vampires and witches and all the paranormal fun, I just knew from that moment of announcement that my hands would be itching for her novels. And I was not wrong. The moment this baby landed, I went straight to it and loved every single word of it. I actually am not the biggest fan of vampires... yes that's right, I was #TEAMJACOB. But this novel however, has turned me into an addict for more vampires being in my life! Everything about Lucas has one hundred percent made me drool and made me want to bleed for him. Kind of dark, I know. But when my blood is boiling for some good, "old fashioned" passion and love there is not stopping this feeling.

Now that that's out of the way, let's talk about the story shall we? We are introduced to a powerful witch named Callie, who comes across a very old vampires named Lucas. Both individuals, brought upon a situation that should not be okay to be in. Meaning, both being from different worlds, they should not fit together, right? Well for these two that rule is out the door. The chemistry that they both have is something beyond the un-known power they possess. Beyond the speed that Lucas has, and beyond the magic spells and potions that Callie can make. Their connection is just the right touch of paranormal that my blood (and body) really needed. And let's also not miss out on pointing out that Lucas, is a freaking dream boat! I want him more than anything! Yes, he wants to be with Callie in a physical type of way at first, but once he learns more about her and that she is also this outcast from her family of "non-normals" meaning humans, he knows that protecting her is all he wants. All these years, all the centuries of being alone and being with careless women, Lucas has finally found the one that can officially destroy his heart if anything happens to her or their relationship. Callie knows that he is different from anyone she has ever encountered as well. Her curiosity of wanting to be with him is one that spikes her interest in the best of ways;
"I want this.
I need this.
He needs it too. There's hunger in his eyes and I know this time it's not for my blood but for my body. But it's more than physical. I don't know how I know it, but I do. And I know he's hurting inside just like I am, one step away from being pulled back and swallowed into a big, black void..."

When the truth comes out about Callie's past and how truly powerful she can be, obstacles are put in the way of her relationship with Lucas. He must also learn that even though their relationship is one that is considered forbidden and dangerous for the sake of both kinds, his heart who stopped beating many moons ago, finally beats for the one individual who can forever heal his broken wounds. And that is what truly makes me fall in love with this story. That though years pass, your true soul mate is actually out there waiting for you to reach and protect them from any harm or anyone.

Overall, Emily Goodwin has created yet another romance novel that has just taken my breath away. Never in a million years would I have thought that my inner paranormal geek would come out to play again after that Twilight years. And this series is JUST starting. I am keeping all my fingers crossed that the next novel belongs to Kristy, Callie's best friend who is also a witch. Her innocence draws to me in the best of ways, and I am beyond invested in this series already that I just need the next book to come out, like ASAP!

This is definitely not my week!!!
This book felt like it was written by an hormonal 16 years old.
First, I don’t understand why describe a character very specifically and then make it act nothing like this characteristics. Nothing!!!!
Lucas, we were told was a very old, powerful scary vampire but actually handled himself like a nerdy, lovesick and basically whipped school boy.
The dialogues were very simple to the point both characters felt kind of stupid.
I’m on vacation!!! I don’t have to suffer through this!!!
Don’t get the high ratings, this was not working for me from around 30%

109 year old Edward Cullen had far better control on his sexual needs and thoughts than this apparent 1600 year old vampire called Lucas.

On second thought, I'd bet that even Emmett Cullen would have a far better control than Lucas.

I have been dying to get my hands on this book from Emily Goodwin since she first announced she was writing it!

It's a paranormal romance & follows Callie, who is a powerful, witch. She stops a vampire from draining the blood of a human at a bar, and that is where she meets Lucas. A strong, old and powerful vampire. With witches and vampires natural enemies, their interest in each other is peaked. Callie may not be as strong as a vampire- but she has more power than most witches her age. When witches start showing up dead in the area, it's safe to say that Lucas makes it on her suspect list. Never trust a vampire Callie has been told... But what happens if you begin to fall for one?

I loved this story. I haven't read much in the way of paranormal romance besides a few YA novels (I'm looking at you, twilight 😂), so this was definitely new territory for me. But, I absolutely love Emily's books and writing and this was no different.

I love vampires, and Lucas was no exception. He was hot, strong and powerful and went for exactly what he wanted. I loved how strong and sassy and badass Callie and her friends (& cats!) were. I loved the story, from beginning to end, and cannot wait for the next book. I read this book non stop and not even a ghost pressence took take me away from it (I mean, my dog growling and barking at nothing screams ghost right? 🤷😂😂 No idea bc I just continued on reading!)

If you love vampires, witches, paranormal romance- or like me and new to it- then you need to read this book! It's a great introduction into paranormal romance & great for those who are already immersed in and love it. So light some candles, grab a glass of wine and prepare to jump into the sexy world of vampires and witches in Dead of Night. 5⭐ out of 5⭐

"My heart hasn’t beat in over a thousand years, but losing you would break it."

Dead of Night by Emily Goodwin is a pulse-pounding action packed love story with one of the best push and pull banter that you'll have the pleasure to read about. Callie & Lucas had me hooked from the very first page. It has a flawless blend of high-stakes romance that was exhilarating with secrets, lies, and utter betrayal.

. . .
I haven't read a good paranormal romance in a long while, and when I picked up Dead of Night. . . My heart burst out of my chest. The raw intense chemistry. . . the banter . . and snappy dialogue. . . This is a five plus read for me. I will admit I fell in love with Lucas and Callie's story from the beginning. Lucas. . . gah. He made me feel like I just melted in a puddle of goo. But what made this story for me was Callie's character. She was so strong, snarky, and sarcastic. She fought for what she believed in, and Lucas was right there beside her.

If you are looking for a an action-packed, steamy love story look no further.
Dead of Night is a book I highly recommend reading for PNR fans like myself.

This was just so good! Callie is one badass amazing witch, sometimes she`s a bitch but what can one do after what she`ve been going through and Lucas is just well as Callie put it "walking sex on a stick!" haha. I love how protective and strong he is, but he also has a soft and respectfull side. Look forward to the next book!

I was lucky enough to get an ARC of this book and I was going crazy banana pants waiting for it to hit my Kindle!

Callie is a witch, Lucas is a vampire. There's a spark right away but since witches and vampires are natural enemies there's a little push and pull before they give in. The beginning felt a little off too me, I wasn't sure if it wasn't clicking for me because I wasn't quite sold on Callie and Lucas connecting or their characters as the book opened but something wasn't grabbing me at first.

Once the story moves on it got so much better for me and I felt like I was watching an episode of Supernatural (an episode where the sex was on screen HA! Hawt!) and stopped trying to figure out what wasn't working with the romance and got fully engrossed in the action adventure. Callie and Lucas make an AMAZING team! Seriously I cannot wait for more of them! This is book 1 and book 2 will be here before we know it! YASSSSS

If you aren't normally a fan of Paranormal Romance but enjoy watching shows like Supernatural or heck even Buffy the Vampire Slayer (LUKE PERRY FOREVER!) then give this book a try, I think you'll be amazed at how much you enjoy it!

*I voluntarily read and reviewed an ARC of this book*

4.5 “Bite Me” Stars!!!

It has been a long time since I read a book with vampire elements. Not one book has piqued my interest, maybe it’s because I hold Twilight at a high standard that I haven’t given another book a shot? I don’t know, but what I do know is after reading Dead of Night I need more vampire books in my life! I especially need to read more PNR because quite frankly I miss it, badly.

Callie, the heroine is a badass witch. She doesn’t take crap from anyone. She dances to the best of her own drum. She doesn’t back down and is the first to take on any challenge. She’s fiercely loyal and that’s a trait she doesn’t take lightly. I’m so intrigued to learn more about Callie and also, possibly about her true origins.

Lucas, oh what can I say? This 1600 hundred year old vampire had me swooning nonstop. He’s moody, sexy and such a badass. He’s all alpha, but not the point where it’s over-the-top. He isn’t afraid to step aside and let Callie handle herself without him taking over. I fell for him with every page. I couldn’t get enough and just wanted more.

Dead of Night was the exact PNR that I needed. It had mystery, lots of intrigue and it was action-packed. I loved the characters and loved the secondary characters just as much. Oh, I also got a kick-out-of Callie’s familiars. An all around great read. I can’t wait for the next book in the series, I need it now.

Well tickle my spellbinding fancy, wow. I was beyond ecstatic to find out one of my personal favorite authors was venturing into PNR world, because why not? It is such a fun genre, one that I am quite new to considering I haven't stepped foot into this genre since back in the Sookie Stackhouse days and Twilight left me unsatisfied in continuing the YA Paranormal world genre. However, recently I am finding myself more and more in the PNR more geared towards the adult audience and by golly I am in love.

Let me start by saying that I obsess over Emily Goodwin's writing style - she has me gushing on the floors, melting with the swoonage or chuckling like a mad banshee with her character antics, and lets not forget the waterfall of tears she can bestow on me. She is just a phenomenal writer in the New Adult Romance world, at least for me. So again, it is a no brainer I would follow her adventure into the PNR with Dead of Night.

Why wouldn't I follow, the characters were absolute perfection. Callie reminded me a lot of a blend between the Sabrina in The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, hint of Sookie and a dash of something fresh. I loved her personality. Not only was she a force to be reckoned with, but ultimately she was a true, strong willed heroine. She was her own person, she made her own mind up and all the while she was actually extremely powerful. Some of the scenes with her, Callie sent chills down my back. She definitely did not play damsel lightly...

Though when it was time to be a damsel, Lucas was there to protect. oh my lanta, what can I say about Lucas that won't make me drool? I adored him the second his character was introduced. He had this menacing sex appeal that was just demanding to be licked. I mean it ladies, he was a vampire of many layers and watching Callie peel away the edges was utterly torturous and satisfying all at the same time. Lucas was just this sexy, alpha vamp who was absolute gem. There, I admitted it.

And even though I will admit that between the story line and the romance, the plot was a lot more tame-ish than I would have expected a PNR to be, it was very sweet and gentle in certain aspects of the build but where the gentle ended was when the passion between Callie and Lucas lit up the pages. Again, I am new to the genre myself, I like things to be light, I like things to be dark, I can take any angle willing its way towards me, so even with this being the more gentler side of the paranormal world, the romance was panty melting. There was such a powerful chemistry that really dominated both characters towards one another, it was instant in the most perfect of ways. The bickering, the jokes, the overall mental connection these two shared was just magical.

Obviously I cannot get away without mentioning some interesting supporting characters - because, well why not? I loved Callie's familiars. I also enjoyed the snippets of backstory that tied this crazy cat lady into a charming minx. Binx was definitely a cute favorite, personally. And between the family drama with Callie and her Coven of witching besties, it was just jammed pack with some interesting dynamics that just flowed nicely with the main characters and the plot definitely. Eliza especially made me chuckle, every time I couldn't help but pick up on this Pamela TruBlood vibe and I flipping loved it.

Bottom line, I obviously thoroughly enjoyed Dead of Night. It was fun, clever, sexy, and deviously charming. I could not get over the chemistry between Lucas and Callie, they were both drop dead scrumptious from the start. Not only was the romance absolutely melt off your seat gooey, the plot was especially intriguing. It was jammed pack with great build that overall made this such an entertaining read. Between the romance (again, delicious) to the secondary characters, the political undertones and the spell entrancing action-packed plot, it was great. Cannot wait to see what comes next...

Callie ends up stopping a vampire from maybe killing a human by a bar but when Lucas comes out to see what's going on, Callie thinks she's going to have to fight three vampires instead of jut the one. So when Lucas offers to take her home because she's had too much to drink, she's not sure what to think but she let's him take her home.

Lucas is sixteen hundred years old and it's been a long time since someone has surprised him or made him feel anything new and with Callie he's feeling something.

When Callie realizes that someone is stalking her she's gonna need help from not only other witch's but from Lucas as well. Lucas doesn't mind though because he seems a little infatuated with her. But when witches start getting murdered and it looks like a vampire might be doing it, Callie has doubts about her new boyfriend. He's old and powerful enough to be able to take out a powerful witch. She just hopes that he isn't the one she might have to kill.

While the main mystery is solved and the demon that was chasing Callie and the other witches is gone, a lot of other questions are raised and not answered. So while the main mystery is concluded I can't really call this ending a cliffhanger since it appears the story will continue to the next book. So hopefully we get more answers in the next book. But I really liked Lucas and Callie, they might be totally opposites but they really fit together nicely. Lucas is such a nice guy, and Callie is a strong woman which I loved.

I loved that Callie and her friend owned a book store with a lot of romance books it in. She said she liked romance because of the HEA (Happily Ever After) in them because real life is rarely that way. She'd had a rough life especially since she was the only one in her family to have witch powers and they hated her for that.

Emily Goodwin is an author to have caught my attention on a couple of occasions. With Dead of Night, the first book in the Thorne Hill series, I finally jumped into one of her books.

In truth, this isn’t quite a full four-star rating. It was so close I had to round up, but when compared to some of my other four-star paranormal romance reads, it doesn’t quite match up. It was addictive, it was a lot of fun, but it was a wee bit on the basic side when compared to some of the complex paranormal books I’ve read in the past. Despite the simplicity, I had a lot of fun with this one.

It was a fun storyline, one that sucks you in quickly. The characters are a lot of fun, there are questions you will find yourself curious about throughout, and by the end of the book you’re left wanting more. This wasn’t quite a ‘wow’ read, but it was a ‘could not put it down’ read. More than worth the read, I’ll be picking up book two, but not quite enough to be labelled a favourite.

I have high hopes for book two, though, and am eager to find out more.

So I love paranormal romance. I really do. Usually it's full of some good world building and some slow burn sexual tension to set you up for future books in the series. This one did not do that but I was some how still surprised by how much I enjoyed it. It pretty much reads like a contemporary romance with 2019 slang words (like yaas) but there's a paranormal plot and well the main characters are a witch and a vampire.

Callie is a witch who owns an indie book store and hunts demons on occasion. She has three cat familiars. Familiars are spirits who bond with a witch and protect her. They can take on any form they like. Most people only have one but Callie is special. One day she goes for a drink at a bar and stops a vampire from drinking a human against her will. That puts her on Lucas' radar.

Lucas is an old vampire who runs the bar. When he meets Callie he's intrigued by her mostly cause her directness and badass witchery. Normally vampires and witches do not get along but he can't help himself and finds himself wanting to be all up in her life. Callie is cool with it cause they're super attracted to each other and make it very clear to one another what will go down.

There's been a demon going around killing witches and Callie and the rest of her coven, as well as Lucas, are trying to figure out why and kill it before it kills everyone else.

I normally do not like this type of romance cause it's basically a sexfest with plot sprinkled in between but I really, really liked Lucas and Callie and her loyalty to her friends and them to her is something I crave for in real life. The honesty between all was so refreshing and relatable that I couldn't help but get swept into the story. I will definitely continue reading the series because there's more to Callie than even she knows and I can't wait to discover what that is.

I liked the story for the most part- and I was interested in the witch/vampire politics as well as the big bad. I was also into the beginnings of the romance going on between Callie and Lucas

....but some of the stuff the H was saying kind of gave me slight 'yuck' vibes even if it was played off as a joke between them.

“You’re such a pig.” --“You keep saying that, but your body says otherwise.”

“Shall I meet you at your place later? I assume you’d like to change into something that shows more skin.”

“You sound so sure you’ll get lucky.”-- “I always do.”

“I’ll give you what you want, but not until I’ve gotten what I need.”

I mean, sometimes he was crass and it was obvious he cared for Callie- but other times I was just thinking 'come on man really?'

description

Either way like I said- I enjoyed the plot overall, but I don't know if I'm going to rush to finish this series atm.

Oh my gosh, this book was absolutely amazing. I can definitely recommend it if you love Vampire books as much as I do. I know the vampire hype has come to an end, but I really miss some fangy stories ;-D
Callie and Lucas were so much fan to read about and I can't wait for the next book. A huge thanks to the author, who created an interesting world, a strong heroine and a charming and hot vampire. Also I am so in love with these familiars!!!

Gah! I am completely blown away by this book. It was pure brilliance. The writing, the dialogue, the characters, the plot... everything was just so perfect. It’s so hard to come by a good witch book and I’m glad I decided to take a chance on this book!

Callie is one badass powerful witch. She has an unfortunate encounter with an old as dirt vampire who is making her feel things she shouldn’t feel. He strips her bare with his eyes. This human witch has piqued Lucas’s interest. It seems like he can’t get enough of her. She does not fear him which he finds interesting and is a major turn on. Callie wants nothing more to lose herself in this feeling but there are more pressing matters to deal with, like witches that are being targeted and brutally murdered and Callie can’t help but think Lucas might be the culprit. Only because of the fact that he is super old and powerful enough,

I love the dynamics if Callie’s and Lucas’s relationship. Their powers rivaled each others. They were both badasses and put together, they were unstoppable and slightly crazy. I also love how different Lucas was around Callie. You could feel how much he cared for and and wanted to protect her, even when he downplayed it by wanting her only to have sex.

I can’t wait for the next book in this series. I have a lot of answered questions that are going to bug the hell out of me. Book one got me hooked. I need my next fix. Book two come soon. I’m can already feel the shakes coming on.

Move over Sookie Stackhouse!! I absolutely freaking loved this book... loved this couple and their story. They’re so perfect for each other. Callie is our snarky kick-ass witch whom I loved from the start, Lucas is a 1600+ year old vampire that’s finally met his match and the one person that makes him feel alive again.

When witches around Callie’s town are being murdered it’s put her coven on high alert. Callie finds her powers are much stronger than she ever anticipated. While Lucas has finally met someone whose powers rival his own, he’s instantly attracted to Callie’s in your face personality and immense powers. Witches and Vampires are supposed to be mortal enemies but they’ve finally found the one persons that makes them feel again. Witches being murdered, Callie’s anti-vamp family, running her book store with her BFF and trying to navigate a relationship with a 1600 year old dream boat... the suspense just keeps on coming! (Did I mention the love scenes are super hot?!!!)

Emily Goodwin has me hooked with this one... I can’t wait for the next!!

I read this book in ONE DAY. That’s all it took for me to fall madly in love with Lucas King. So we have a few things going on in this book (all things I love):

ROMANCE: Holy Hotcakes this book is STEAMY. Be sure to be wearing your gloves to hold this baby because it is HAWT and I loved it. This romance is not another “I’m too cool to admit my feelings” book. Both characters are very mature and not afraid of their attraction and feelings, which is a HUGE plus for me. I can only take so much angst when it comes to attraction. *Cue wailing teen after being dumped by her boyfriend for her ‘better interest’* This romance is steamy and very mature in mind and body. Love Love Love.

MYSTERY: Someone is killing witches and we have no idea who. Is it a friend? Is it Lucas? Is it someone or something else? We have no idea. But our heroine AIN’T AFRAID. She is a badass witch with some awesome witchy powers so prepare for awesome.

FAMILY DRAMA: We get hints of family drama and a history behind Callie’s upbringing AND IT MAKES YOU WANT TO KNOW SO MUCH MORE. Callie’s character development is lovely and I want you all to drown in the love of this book that I have so GO READ IT.

Reading Time: 6 hours (2 days)
Romance: Hot
World- & character building: amazing
Featuring: sexy vampire, kick-ass heroine with troubled past, witches, magic, demon, 3 cats

I fell in love with Callie in the first chapter. She was sassy and strong, but a vulnerability and self-deprecation were simmering just below the surface that made her intensely likable. As the novel went on, I found myself more and more fascinated with Callie. Lucas was not instantly enchanting, his broody moodiness called to me in a different way, a more intense way. He’s precisely the kind of book boyfriend I appreciate most. I loved how intensely they connected and respected each other’s wants, needs, and abilities.

Note: Dead of Night (The Thorne Hill Series Book 1) is available on Kindle Unlimited, If you want to continue with this series you have to pay $3.99 p/book (series of 7 books now).

Fun Quotes
“Hit him hard and hit him deep. Strike the heart and make him weep,” I whisper and feel magic pulse through my hand and into the blade. Without a second thought, I spring up and turn, throwing the dagger into the night. It hits one of the demons, sinking into its chest and sizzling with red-hot magic. – Dead of Night (The Thorne Hill Series Book 1) by Emily Goodwin

“You have to understand.” His voice is deep and gravelly with need. “I don’t want to just fuck you. I want you, and fucking you is only the beginning. I. Want. You,” he says slowly. “I want you to be mine.” – Dead of Night (The Thorne Hill Series Book 1) by Emily Goodwin

2.5 ⭐️s - I wanted to like this way more than I did. I felt good about the strong FMC witch, loved some of the questions of why she was being chased but so much of the story kinda just goes round and round.. the ending Fucken pissed me off too lol. Not even a good lead up to the next one, just back to questioning her man. Stupid. BUT as mentioned, it did keep me entertained ish.

From the synopsis to the snappy teasers with the witty one liners, this book intrigued me. As I began to read, it wasn't long before I found myself fully immersed in the story. It was sexy, mysterious, and exciting.

Goodwin's fictional characters were well developed, and ones I quickly took a liking to. Generally I'm not a huge fan of the total Alpha Hero, but because Lucas is a Vampire, and that is their way, his claiming and fierce protective and possessive nature worked for me.

Callie was the kind of heroine I love. She was kick ass, strong, and could take care of herself. Her and Lucas were an interesting pair, one that probably shouldn't be together, but somehow fit so well. I felt the intense passion between them with every encounter, and I easily got on board their relationship train.

If you love paranormal romance involving witches, vampires, and demons, read Dead of Night. If you don't love paranormal romance, give it a try anyways.
Because I'm the latter, I do not love paranormal romance, BUT I truly enjoyed this book and I'm eagerly awaiting the next one!

3.5. This was a quick read, but it felt like something a younger teen would read minus the sex scenes. One of the main problems is that Lucas does not have enough depth for a vampire this old.

Blown away. Callie is a witch with amazing powers in a world where people are aware of vampires but witches try to live under the radar. She is incredibly confident and has built a great life for herself in Thorne Hill with her own business with her friend Kristy. But there is more to Callie’s story and why she no longer sees her family. When her sister shows up and invites her to her niece’s birthday, it creates a dilemma on whether she will visit her family. Lucas is over 1600 years old and as a vampire, has seen a lot in all those years but meeting Callie is a true surprise. Her powers constantly surprise him and her spunky, sarcastic personality keep him on his toes. As this unlikely duo begin to date, Callie is concerned about a threat that is killing witches which pulls Lucas into all the drama. This is an amazing paranormal romance with a unique take on the world that built many layers to Callie and Lucas’s world through family, friends and the mystery. Add in the steamy and sexy vampire sex for a romance that is worth devouring. I voluntarily read an ARC of this book and this is my honest review.
