What is #BlackLivesMatter?

#BlackLivesMatter began as a hashtag used by community organizers Alicia GarzaPatrisse Cullors, and Opal Tometi after the 2013 acquittal of George Zimmerman, the killer of Trayvon Martin, a 17-year-old African-American high schooler; in 2014, the movement became known for their demonstrations after the deaths of Michael Brown and Eric Garner at the hands of the police. Since then, the #BlackLivesMatter movement has become a global organization with a mission to dismantle white supremacy.
