Nina Power and Seth Kim-Cohen sit down to hash out pressing issues in sound, music, philosophy, economics, and what passes for politics these days. They will center their discussion on the under-heralded work of US/UK artist, Christine Kozlov, devoting particular attention to her audio tape pieces of the late-60s and early-70s. These works engage the technology of media and mechanical reproduction in ways that speak to the issues of their time, while also resonating provocatively with ours. Power and Kim-Cohen will discuss the cultural politics – then and now – of Kozlov’s virtual erasure from the history of conceptual art.
Seth Kim-Cohen is a musician, artist, and writer. His research interrogates sound and music as they intersect with politics, economics, history, and other cultural practices. His books include Against Ambience (2013), In The Blink of an Ear: Toward A Non-Cochlear Sonic Art (2009), and One Reason To Live: Conversations About Music (2006). Kim-Cohen has presented artistic work on all but two continents and has released numerous albums of increasingly experimental, rock-based music. John Peel once bought him a beer. He is Associate Professor of Art History, Theory, and Criticism at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.
