The Middot Project: Nine Days of Practicing Values
The Nine Days of Av begin on Wednesday, July 22, 2020. These days, which end with the fast of Tisha B’Av on July 30, are traditionally a time of mourning for tragedies across our history, including the destruction of the two Temples in Jerusalem. Many refrain from weddings, music, drinking wine and eating meat, and other forms of joy or celebration.

Here at NuRoots, we believe that this nine-day period calls us to acknowledge continued problems in the world and in our communities as a means of preventing further destruction. It’s a time for introspection and an invitation to work on our middot—our personal values and moral traits—as a way to prepare ourselves and our communities for the work of rebuilding the world.

Every morning during the Nine Days of Av (July 22–30), we will embark on our journey of tikkun middot, highlighting some of the virtues we value most, and sharing daily prompts and exercises for you to do at home. As a community, let’s take on a commitment to improve and turn tragedy into progress.
