Community Outreach Story

You have most likely seen our volunteer, Barbara Lapid, at the BHH table in the Tuesday Market. She is one of our volunteers that offers free blood pressure checks at the Boquete Health and Hospice table. She recently related this story:

Two weeks ago at the Tuesday market a woman came to have her BP checked as she hadn’t been feeling well. She was here on a relocation tour and I recall had been on medication for her pressure. Her reading was a high 180/90 and I encouraged her to see Dr. Gomez immediately. This week at the market I was informed that she had gone to Dr. Gomez, and her reading was 190/100. He gave her some IV meds and told her that she may have been hours away from suffering a stroke or thrombosis. I must say that it felt wonderful to know we helped and to see it happen!

Boquete Health and Hospice Community Education Presentations

As part of our goal to provide community education there were two Being Prepared presentations in January and a guest speaker at our February monthly meeting.

Being Prepared Part 1

Betty Landis presented the crucial information needed by expats when they are faced with the death of a loved one in Panama. Being Prepared presentations are well attended and they help with the steps to get your end-of-life documentation in order before you visit your attorney here in Panama. Please see our website listed below for downloads of the necessary documents needed to be prepared for this process.

Being Prepared Part 2

Local attorneys, Juan Contreras and Lourdes Miranda, presented at BCP the second part of Being Prepared. They clarified information and answered questions on:  Living Wills and getting them notarized in David, the Last Will, probate, corporation vs. foundation and titled property after a death.

Again, things do change in Boquete like:
* the notary in Boquete will no longer notarize Living Wills. You must go to the notary in David.
* the crematorium in David is open. Check with Millie, the beautician, for more information. Millie is the local representative for the new crematorium.

Medical Marijauna Presentation and Luncheon

Dr. Roderic Gottula was our speaker at the February 14 general meeting and luncheon. Dr. Gottula is from Pueblo, Colorado where he is presently working in a medical marijuana clinic and prescribes medical marijuana for pain control. His presentation included the history of marijuana, the endocannabinoid  system in our bodies, which type of cannabinoid would fit a person's needs and a list of educational resources for further information. The list of resources will be available on our website page listed below. Dianne Heidke and Elizabeth Worley also gave an update on the recent cannabinoid conference recently held in Panama City.

Everyone enjoyed the healthy and delicious luncheon meal prepared by Nancy Halbert and Nairn Cuttern of N&N Catering. Thank you Nancy and Nairn for your generous work for Boquete Health and Hospice!
