Ford's Lightning pickup truck was the first to do this, but GM's announcement reinforces a great example of the second-order effects of vehicle electrification. Today, a vehicle is a means of transport - it takes you and your stuff from point A to point B. But with a BEV, that vehicle suddenly becomes a backup power source for your home. Or a grid support device that stores solar-generated electricity for resale back into the grid at night. You could strike a deal with your neighbor to power their house at night for an agreed rate too, if you're in an entrepreneurial mood. Or set up a neighborhood co-op microgrid that runs off parked BEVs... The widespread availability of bulk electrical energy storage has the potential (pun intended) to fundamentally alter power grid management options.
Today, GM Energy announced that its first energy management solutions for residential customers are officially available as part of its expanding product ecosystem.
The initial GM Energy offerings will enable customers to use vehicle-to-home (V2H) bidirectional charging technology to provide power from a compatible GM EV to a properly equipped home, helping to mitigate the negative impacts of weather-related outages, and integrate with future clean energy products for even greater personal grid resiliency.

Who could be better positioned to help with wastewater treatment than the scientists who design the chemistry in the plating tanks? Teaming up with our colleagues in MacDermid Envio Solutions is a great opportunity for us to help make our customers both more sustainable and more profitable. We really do go 'beyond the finish'.
POV: you live in Dubai and turn your Porsche AG Taycan into a submarine at short notice. 🚤
Yesterday there was heavy rain in Dubai, but nothing that could stop a Taycan.

I have fallen prey to the urge to chase the solar eclipse tomorrow. But you don't have to go stand in a field in northern New England and wear a welding helmet to experience the magic of TriMac Eclipse(TM), our darkest trivalent chrome finish. [Disclaimer: You should always wear proper protective equipment when on a plating line, including safety glasses!]
Just call up your friendly neighborhood MacDermid Enthone representative and ask how you can get this beautiful and durable finish on your automotive trim, sanitary fixtures, or household goods. You can bring a sleek, durable, and distinctive finish to your products without anxiety over cloudy skies or possibility of retinal damage!

Steve LeVine made a really insightful post about QuantumScape a few days ago, and then I saw this article that reinforced his point. Here is a great example of why it's going to be so tough for alternative battery types to get traction in the market. Li-ion batteries (and that is a pretty broad class at this point) are the incumbent technology, and they're far from new. But they are not mature yet, they work well enough for many purposes already, and their success has meant that the big firms making them have a ton of money to spend on R&D to keep advancing the state of the art. Yes, there is that 1:6 intercalation ratio that provides a theoretical limit on energy density, but 500km / 300 miles of range in EVs is not a stretch even with current technology. Throw in longer lifetimes, continuously decreasing costs, and a lot more charging stations...it will take an enormous leap forward to unseat this technology. Believe me, I will be thrilled to have a 1000 kg EV with 500 km of range (and I'll be in that early adopter line when it becomes available), but I'm not holding my breath while 'conventional' Li-ion battery makers have the resources to fuel innovation in their core tech.

The long-life battery will have 0 degradation in the first 1,000 cycles, Yutong said.
The rapid improvement of LFP batteries is fast becoming a watershed moment for battery industry.
It also points to dominance of large players like CATL and BYD in this technology sphere.
With cycle life getting better than ever, what do you think will be the next innovation battlefield in batteries?
Glad to have your input in the comments section.

Jean LaPlante and Adam Blakeley wrote a really informative article on EN that I highly recommend. Electroless Nickel is a very versatile coating technology, and it has physical properties that can't be matched by any other method. Of late, we are seeing it play an important role in thermal management systems in EVs, but there are dozens of other uses that have been around for years. Like every manufacturing process, attention to detail matters. And few people know the details as well as Adam and Jean!

It is important to take steps to prevent plate-out in electroless nickel plating solutions, and Adam Blakeley and Jean LaPlante from MacDermid Enthone Industrial Solutions teamed to write about this topic in an article at FinishingAndCoating.com. "The occurrence of plate-out will cause defects and impact the quality of the deposit," Adam and Jean say, adding "It can also lead to increased costs due to wasted nickel and necessitate chemical stripping, resulting in increased labor and downtime." No shop needs that, so please check out this insightful article and thanks to Adam and Jean for their help with this topic.

We invest a huge amount of our resources into anticorrosion solutions for parts made from steel. Traditionally, this has been for structural and cosmetic reasons. But this study suggests that our industry-leading zinc and zinc nickel coating systems may actually have a real benefit in greenhouse gas reduction over the long term. Our coatings increase the service lifetime of parts and prevents the emissions that would be caused by their replacement.
Many studies have attempted to calculate the cost of corrosion, usually found to be 3% to 4% of the world’s gross domestic product (GDP). That cost primarily comes in the form of materials replacement. But what is the environmental cost of that materials replacement?

There's also a shout out to Nadia Billen in there, but the list of my smart colleagues that made this possible would be very, very long. It was a genuine honor to be able to represent our work, which is far from over.
