Visualizing Fractions Part 2B: Modeling Addition And Subtraction Using Cuisenaire Rods * Part B Unlike Denominators

fractions and cuisenaire rods

Course description

Model addition and subtraction of fractions with unlike denominators, using paper Cuisenaire rods.

A 45-minute presentation on bringing fractions to a concrete model using Cuisenaire rods.  Cuisenaire rods allow students to model fractions and develop intrinsic ability to add and subtract fractions through conceptual understanding rather than by rote memorization of algorithms.  By engaging students in these modeling activities, the outcome will be to have increased understanding of addition and subtraction of proper fractions with unlike denominators.

Refer to the Facilitator Guide for directions about printing and cutting the paper Cuisenaire rods ahead of time.

It is recommended to participate in Visualizing Fractions: Modeling addition and subtraction using Cuisenaire rods * Part A like denominators, prior to this video, for an introduction to Cuisenaire rods, and practice modeling simpler fractions.
