Gunshots reported near UNCW campus

WILMINGTON -- Police did not locate any victims or gunmen after reported gunfire Wednesday near the University of North Carolina Wilmington campus, officials confirmed.

UNCW spokeswoman Janine Iamunno said that as of 2:15 p.m., police had not found evidence of a shooting around Campus Edge Apartments. New Hanover County emergency dispatchers also confirmed that EMS had not transported anyone from the scene to the hospital.

"A witness reported seeing a person with a gun and hearing gunfire," an alert sent to campus read. "Four other people reported hearing a gunshot. No gunman has been located and no injuries have been reported."

According to Wilmington Police Department spokeswoman Jennifer Dandron, the shots were reported at 1:05 p.m. Wednesday. An alert sent to UNCW students stated that the shots happened in the area of Campus Edge Apartments, on Racine Drive just north of campus.

Earlier Iamunno wrote in an email, "I have no reason to believe that any UNCW students or personnel are involved, nor do we believe there is any immediate threat to campus."
