What we know about coronavirus cases in the Wilmington area

As of Thursday, April 23, there have been 131 positive cases of coronavirus confirmed in the Wilmington area.

New Hanover County has 74 of those cases, Brunswick has 38 and Pender has 11. In addition, Brunswick County has seen eight non-residents test positive while visiting the county.

In all, there have been 77 reported recoveries (New Hanover 48, Brunswick 29) and eight deaths (4 in Brunswick, 3 in New Hanover and 1 in Pender).

Here’s what we know about each:

Case No. 1: Reported by Brunswick County on March 14. The Brunswick County resident displayed symptoms while traveling through Louisiana. When they returned to Brunswick County, they were still showing symptoms and contacted a medical care provider. According to a release from Brunswick County, New Hanover County and the Wilmington International Airport have been notified that the same individual flew into ILM on March 10. After arriving at ILM, this individual used their personal vehicle to return to their home in Brunswick County and did not make any additional stops in either New Hanover or Brunswick counties.

Case No. 2: Reported by New Hanover County on March 18. At a county press conference, New Hanover County Board of Commissioners chairwoman Julia Olson-Boseman said the case is believed to have resulted from international travel. The patient was tested on March 16, after returning through Wilmington International Airport a day earlier.

Case No. 3: Reported by Brunswick County on March 19. According to a press release, the individual became symptomatic while traveling in Connecticut. The individual was still symptomatic when returning to Brunswick County via car and followed proper isolation measures on their return trip. The individual returned to Brunswick County on March 12 and immediately reported their symptoms to a medical provider and was tested the same day.

Case No. 4: Reported by Brunswick County on March 20. According to a press release, the individual was not symptomatic while returning to the area March 13 following a trip to New York. The individual later became symptomatic and reported their symptoms to a medical provider March 15. The individual did not travel from their home while symptomatic. The individual agreed to self-isolation after taking the test March 15. There is one adult contact in the home who also started to self-quarantine with the individual March 15. Neither has direct contact with children in Brunswick County.

Case No. 5: Reported by Brunswick County on March 20. The individual was tested March 13 with a medical provider in Tennessee while traveling. They returned to the area March 15 and self-quarantined.

Case No. 6: Reported by UNCW on March 21. The student in question left campus for spring break March 10 and returned to Wilmington on March 17. The student has not been on campus since before March 10.

UNCW also reported a second student had tested positive for the virus. That student left for a study-abroad program in January and returned March 14 via Charlotte before going back to their home town, which is not in New Hanover County. The student has not been on campus or in New Hanover County since before leaving the country, and does not count toward the New Hanover County numbers. UNCW is contacting the small group of students studying abroad with the infected student.

Case No. 7: Reported by New Hanover County on March 21. This person traveled to New York and returned to New Hanover County via Myrtle Beach International Airport on March 17. The person did not feel sick when traveling, but began to feel ill after returning to New Hanover County. The person went to the doctor March 19. A test was conducted and the person began isolation immediately.

Case No. 8: Reported by New Hanover County on March 21. This person traveled to Colorado and came back to New Hanover County on March 9. The person began to feel ill March 11 and was tested for COVID-19 on March 17. This person did not self-isolate before going to the doctor, and the health department is trying to determine who came into close contact with them.

Case No. 9: Reported by Brunswick County on March 21. This case is travel-related, with the patient showing symptoms after returning home.

Case No. 10: Reported by Brunswick County on March 21. This case is travel-related, with the patient showing symptoms after returning home. This person has not had direct contact with children in Brunswick County.

Case No. 11: Reported by Brunswick County on March 22. This case is travel-related, with the patient showing no symptoms.

Case No. 12: Reported by Brunswick County on March 23. This individual became symptomatic March 13 and was tested March 18.

Cases Nos. 13-16: Reported by New Hanover County on March 23. All four cases appear to be travel-related.

Case No. 17: Reported by New Hanover County on March 23. This is the first case in New Hanover contracted by community transmission, which was announced March 24. County officials came to this conclusion because the of the person’s lack of travel history or known exposure. This means the individual became symptomatic in New Hanover County, and Public Health cannot identify a direct link to the virus.

Case No. 18: Reported by New Hanover County on March 24. This case is related to out-of-state travel.

Case No. 19: Reported by Cleveland County on March 24. This case in related to a Cleveland County resident vacationing in Brunswick County on March 16 and became symptomatic while there. The person went to a healthcare provider in Brunswick County and tested positive.

Cases Nos. 20-24: Reported by New Hanover County on March 25. All cases appear travel related.

Case No. 25: Reported by Brunswick County on March 26. It is a travel-related case.

Case No. 26: Reported by New Hanover County on March 26. The individual is isolated.

Case No. 27: Reported by Brunswick County on March 27. The individual is a contact of an existing travel-related case. Public Health has already identified potential contacts to this individual and contact notification is being completed. Neither individual has known contact with children in Brunswick County.

Cases Nos. 28-33: Reported by New Hanover County on March 27. All cases appear travel-related.

Cases Nos. 34-37: Reported by New Hanover County on March 28. All cases appear travel-related.

Case No. 38: Reported by Brunswick County on March 29. The case is travel related and has a close contact who is also self-quarantining with the individual. Public Health has already identified potential contacts and contact notification is being completed. The individual has no known contact with children in Brunswick County.

Cases Nos. 39-40: Reported by New Hanover County on March 29. Both cases appear to be community transmission and are not travel related. The individualsareisolated, and Public Health is working on contact tracing to determine those whohave beenin close contact with them.

Case No. 41: Reported by Brunswick County on March 30. The case is travel related and has a close contact who is also self-quarantining with the individual. Public Health has already identified potential contacts and contact notification is being completed. The individual has no known contact with children in Brunswick County.

Cases Nos. 42-44: Reported by New Hanover County on March 30. All three cases appear to be community transmission and are not travel related. The individualsareisolated, and Public Health is working on contact tracing to determine those whohave beenin close contact with them.

Cases Nos. 45-46: Reported by Brunswick County on March 31. These cases are separate from one another, are travel-related and both are isolating at home.

Cases Nos. 47-50: Reported by New Hanover County on March 31. Three of the four cases appear to be community transmission and one is travel related.

Cases Nos. 51-56: Reported by Brunswick County on April 1. All six cases are separate from one another and all are travel-related. These individuals are isolating at home and any household contacts are also self-quarantining at this time. Public Health is identifying any potential contacts with these individuals and contact notification is being completed. None of these individuals have known contact with children in Brunswick County.

Cases Nos. 57-61: Reported by New Hanover County on April 1. Four cases appear to be travel related, and one appears to be community transmission.

Case No. 62: Reported by Brunswick County on April 2. A household contact of a positive case that had traveled and was identified on April 1. These individuals are isolating at home; there are no other household contacts.

Cases Nos. 63-65: Reported by New Hanover County on April 2. The cases appear travel related. This bringsthe county’s total positive case count to 42.The individualsareisolated, and Public Health is working on contact tracing to determine those whohave beenin close contact with them.

Case No. 66: Reported by Pender County on April 3. It’s the first reported case in the county and travel related. The individual was tested on Mar. 31 and confirmation was received by the Pender County Health Department on Apr. 3. The individual self-isolated at the onset of symptoms and remains isolated.

Case No. 67: Reported by Brunswick County on April 3. It’s the area’s first reported case that resulted in death. The individual lack of travel history or known exposure was concluded that the individual potentially contracted the virus by community transmission. Public Health is working to conduct contact tracing to determine those who were in close contact with them. There is one household contact to this individual who is self-quarantining at home. This individual was not one of the previously identified positive cases in the county. They had taken a test before passing away, which was confirmed as positive following their passing.

Cases Nos. 68-69: Reported by New Hanover County on April 4. Both cases appear to be community transmission. The individuals are isolated and Public Health is working on contact tracing to determine those who have been in close contact with them.

Cases Nos. 70-72: Reported by New Hanover County on April 5. All are isolated while one is believe to have contracted the virus through community transmission.

Cases Nos. 73-76: Reported by New Hanover County on April 6. Two are contacts to previously-confirmed cases and two appear to be community transmission. The individuals are all isolated and Public Health is working on contact tracing to determine those who have been in close contact with them.

Cases Nos. 77-78: Reported by Brunswick County on April 6. Because of these individuals’ lack of travel history or known exposure, these individuals potentially contracted the virus by community transmission.

Case No. 79: Reported by Pender County on April 6. The individual’s exposure was travel-related. The individual is in isolation.

Case No. 80: Reported by New Hanover County on April 7. The case appears travel related. The individual is isolated and Public Health is working on contact tracing to determine those who have been in close contact with them.

Case No. 81: Reported by Brunswick County on April 7. The county was notified of a case involving a resident from another state who tested positive for COVID-19 while visiting. This positive case does not count toward the county’s case counts as they are not from Brunswick County. This individual is currently isolating with five household contacts who are also self-quarantining. No children are involved.

Case No. 82: Reported by New Hanover County on April 8. The case is a contact of a previously-confirmed case. The individual is isolated and Public Health is working on contact tracing to determine those who have been in close contact with them.

Cases Nos. 83-85: Reported by Brunswick County on April 8. These cases are separate from one another. Because of these individuals’ lack of travel history or known exposure, they potentially contracted the virus by community transmission. Any household contacts are currently quarantining and Brunswick County Public Health is completing contact tracing. Two of the cases do not have contact with children in the county. One case does involve minors who are quarantining in the home, but there is no additional contact with children.

Case No. 86: Reported by Brunswick County on April 8. The case involves a non-county resident who tested positive for COVID-19 while visiting. This positive case does not count toward the County’s case counts as they are not from Brunswick County. This individual is currently isolating with four household contacts who are also quarantining. No children are involved.

Cases Nos. 87-88: Reported by Pender County on April 9. The county did not report specifics on these individuals.

Case No. 89: Reported by New Hanover County on April 9. The county did not report specifics on the individual.

Cases Nos. 90-92: Reported by Brunswick County on April 9. This case is a close contact of a previously reported case whose source of exposure is not identifiable at this time. There are other close contacts in the home who are isolating or quarantining. There is no additional contact with children. Contact tracing is already completed. Two other cases are from non-county residents who visited the area. There are other contacts to both of these individuals who are quarantining at home as a result. No children are involved in either case.

Case No. 93: Reported by New Hanover County on April 10. The county did not report specifics on the individual.

Cases Nos. 94-96: Reported by Brunswick County on April 10. Two of the cases are each close contacts to separate, previously reported cases. There are other close contacts in the home who are isolating or quarantining. There is no additional contact with children. Contact tracing is already completed. The third positive is travel-related and there is one close contact quarantining. There is no known contact with children and contact tracing is completed.

Cases Nos. 97-98: Reported by Brunswick County on April 12. The two most recent positive cases are separate from one another and both are a close contact to previously reported cases. One case is isolating at home and has no contact with children or others in Brunswick County. The second case is isolating at home with other isolating or quarantining contacts and no additional contact with children in known. Contact tracing is completed for both cases.

Cases Nos. 99-102: Reported by New Hanover County on April 12. The county did not report specifics on the individuals.

Case No. 103: Reported by New Hanover County on April 13. The county did not report specifics on the individual.

Case No. 104: Reported by New Hanover County on April 14. The county did not report specifics on the individual.

Case No. 105: Reported by Brunswick County on April 15. It marked the eighth positive case of someone who is not a resident but visited the county.

Case No. 106: Reported by New Hanover County on April 15. The county did not report specifics on the individual.

Cases Nos. 107-109: Reported by New Hanover County on April 16. The county did not report specifics on the individuals.

Case No. 110: Reported by Brunswick County on April 16. This case is related to travel exposure and the individual is isolating at home. There is one other household contact who is also isolating. Public Health has completed contact tracing. There is no contact with children in Brunswick County.

Cases Nos. 111-112: Reported by New Hanover County on April 17. The county did not report specifics on the individuals.

Case No. 113: Reported by Pender County on April 17. The county did not report specifics on the individual.

Case No. 114: Reported by Brunswick County on April 20. The person’s case is related to travel exposure and is isolating at home with household contacts that include quarantining adults and children; Public Health has already completed contact tracing for this case.

Case No. 115: Reported by Brunswick County on April 20. This case has one household contact who is quarantining with them and contact tracing is ongoing.

Brunswick Death No. 4: On April 21, Brunswick reported a fourth death in the county. This person is the second non-resident who died while in the county. This was a travel-related case, and the individual was over the age of 65. There are household contacts who are still currently in quarantine.

Case Nos. 116-119: On April 21, Pender County officials announced that four people in the county Correctional Institution have confirmed positive tests for COVID-19. The county and NC Division of Prisons released no further information about the cases.

Cases Nos. 120-121: Later on April 21, Pender County upped its total to 11 cases on its COVID-19 information page. It also announced the first two people with positive tests to be hospitalized.

Case No. 122: On April 21, New Hanover County reported its 69th positive test result. There was no information supplied. In the same press release, the county announced its second and third deaths related to COVID-19. Both of the deceased were in their 80s and considered at high risk because they were over the age of 65 and had underlying medical conditions.

Cases Nos. 123-125: On April 22, New Hanover County reported positives cases Nos. 70-72. No other information was supplied.

Cases Nos. 126-127: On April 23, New Hanover County reported two additional positive test results. No other information was supplied.
