WILMINGTON, N.C. (WECT) - The University of North Carolina Wilmington issued an update Monday for students waiting for refunds from the university.

Housing and dining meal plans will be refunded based on a start date of March 23, 2020, which was the day after the deadline given to students to leave campus. As for the meal plans, student accounts will be credited for the food dollars each individual student has not used.

Payments will begin going out this week and will be made via direct deposit or a mailed check, depending on how a student’s account was set up. According to the press release from the university, leaders intend to have all adjustments completed by April 15, 2020.

It will take 3-5 business days to post to a direct deposit account and two to three weeks for a mailed check.

The UNCW chancellor announced back on March 31, that the UNC system was committed to getting college students their unused dining and housing funds back.

Online instruction at UNCW began on March 23 due to the coronavirus outbreak, and students moved out of their residence halls earlier this month.

“It is our commitment to all UNC System students to get this done as quickly as possible. It is our obligation to North Carolina taxpayers to get this done right. We hope to be able to announce specifics for processing and issuing refunds in the upcoming weeks,” Interim UNC System President Bill Roper said in a press release.

UNCW officials hoped the update would bring students some relief.

“We agree with UNC System leadership regarding the need to expedite applicable refunds, and, upon further guidance from the UNC System, we will do our best to get them processed as quickly and as efficiently as possible. We do not have any further information at this time, including the date as of which refunds would be applied, but we will continue to work hard, as a campus leadership team and in collaboration with the UNC System, to bring our students and their families an update soon,” the email said.

Students with questions pertaining to their housing adjustment are encouraged to email Housing and Residence Life. Students with questions about their dining adjustment are encouraged to email Campus Dining.
